Getting Inspirational

So I got a bee in my bonnet a while ago, and it kept on buzzzing, buzzzzzing, buzzzzzzzzzzing…..

Until I got serious about (finally) painting and redoing the kids’ bedrooms.

The same bee went crazy 4 years ago when I decorated my toddler’s room, and I couldn’t find any illustrated, storybook-ish,  fresh and whimsical children’s art.

When I couldn’t find it, I just made my own. And so I opened an ETSY shop cause other people wanted some too.

This time, I’ve been looking for fresh, colorful, HAPPY, sophisticated Christian Children’s art. There are lots of awesome quotes and font art, but so far, I haven’t been able to find anything in the art category that I’d consider to fit my criteria.

So, I made my own.

And I’m wondering….since I know many of you are mothers who tend towards the same interests….if maybe you’d like to see some Sarah Jane inspirational/religious art for kids??

I’ve been trying to find scriptural, biblical, christian….anything! art for the walls, and so far it’s not really working (too dark, not childlike enough, too babyish, too serious….) and so I actually have like 12 more ideas in my sketchbook waiting to pop, but I wanted to ask first here if this is something you’d like too. Yay? Nay?

I know not all of you would be interested, so pardon me for asking. But if you are, I’d love it if you could spread the word, pin, facebook, etc. cause I’m really interested if other women have the same need I’ve had…..

Good Christian Children’s art.

Let me know, and I’ll get back to you about more ideas I’ve got up my sleeve.

In a nutshell, YES PLEASE! This art stimulates a child’s need to talk and what better that’s talk about the art? Why not have a Christian theme around some of it and let it open up conversation amongst the little recipients? I know my kids will love them and also my little nephew would also. Love the idea!

  • Alice S

YES! YES! I would love to see art that incorporates scripture or Christian themes.

  • http://polkadotskies.etsy.com Elizabeth

    Yes, please! They are lovely!

  • Sian

Yes please… I would really love these (and more of the same) for my church sunday school room! Would be perfect!

  • Liz Pitcavage

    Yes!

  • http://hebesthebloss.blogspot.com/ Rachel Olson

    YES please!

  • Kris

Love what I see so far, would love to see art with scriptures!

  • Dawn

    Yes!!:) Would love it!!

  • kerstin

    Good Morning.
What a wonderful way to start my day… I love these beautiful pieces. I agree with Kris… would love to see some prints with short “child pertinent” scripture. Very sweet drawings! Can’t wait to see more.

    Have a great day!

  • Kate

I think these would be lovely in a church nursery, too! One showing children from around the world with “Jesus loves the little children, all the children of the world” would be particularly nice.

  • http://www.craftymumma.com Gab

    Hi Sarah,

I am not really a ‘churchy’ person BUT I do believe in god and I think some simple prints with words like ‘BELIEVE’ and pretty pictures that can have a two way meaning like believe can mean believe in christ or it can mean believe in yourself… Believe, Trust, Hope ect :)

Yes, please! I would love some prints like this for my son’s room!

  • http://www.busyasabeeinparis.com Maria @ Busy as a Bee in Paris

would love it! illustrated scripture verses with your fresh, bright artistic skills! i would absolutely love it!

  • http://Ascozyasspring.typepad.com Jennifer

Yes! These are lovely. The stuff out there is so overly cutesy. I love your style.

  • Sarah

Yes! What a wonderful idea! :)

  • http://www.whodoesthesethings.blogspot.com nicole

This is a great idea! I would love to have simple scriptures and/or quotes from Primary songs in art form. As soon as I saw these on facebook I was hoping they were for sale. I need something to replace the Christmas scripture art of yours on the wall. It’s my favorite. :)

  • http://yetheabidethfaithful.blogspot.com/ Danielle

    Oh, Yes!!!!

  • Amy

Yes please! I work for a Christian retailer but would never put any of the children’s art (what little of it there is) in my boys’ rooms. Frankly, it’s cheesy and not well done – or really “old school.” Your art would be a very welcome breath of fresh air that I would happily display!

  • http://www.cnydalynn.com mrs d

    YES PLEASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSE! I love these!

I would love one that said – praise God from whom all blessings flow. that is a favorite of mine:)

  • http://www.AlphabetHoops.com Lorene

I have zero interest in displaying Christian art, but I STILL think it’s an awesome idea. There’s definitely a need for it in the marketplace. And I would tell all my friends where they could find some!

  • http://whataknit.blogspot.com Morag Duller

yes please that would be great

  • http://campbellsoupdiary.blogspot.com/ Allison

I think that you definately have a market for such prints. I personally would prefer a print that is not too general or generic, but has a really strong scripture, with a strong meaning. Thank you for taking the bold step to follow the path that is a little less traveled.

  • Lucy

Yes, yes, yes! I have seen so much religious font art. But I want some actual art. Yes!

    • Kristin

Yes! That’s what I was thinking!

  • tara

yes! I really don’t like a lot of the Christian art/decor out there, but like the idea of having faith building art around the house. It’s sad that a lot of what the Christian community puts out there in art, music, etc, is just so mockable…

  • http://www.etsy.com/shop/sweetbabyjamie?ref=si_shop Jamie

I really LOVe that idea! I love your art, and know a lot of other people that do too!!!

  • Callie

I LOVE these and would definitely buy them from your shop! More, please!

  • Laura

    Love it!

  • Julie

Yes, I would love to see more! These are beautiful!

  • http://mariangriffin.blogspot.com Marian Griffin

Yes please! I love these included in your post and would absolutely buy them from your shop!! Now that you’ve mentioned it, I can hardly wait!

  • sarahjanestudios

Oh this is so great to hear from you! It’s true then isn’t it? Rather hard to find the kind of religious children’s art that you’d want to put on your walls? Glad to know I’m not the only one. I love hearing your thoughts…so helpful!

  • Sara

I am with the other ladies!! Christian art would be such a positive influence on a child…there’s no doubt about it!

  • Stephanie

ooh yes please. I would love this for playroom and bedrooms.

  • Gina f.

Yes please! These are perfect! Love them both but the sunshine one is my favorite.

  • Annie

I would love to have a picture of Christ with children by Sarah Jane! Thank you for doing this. You read my mind.

  • Jane

Absolutely! I want my littles to be surrounded in the Word and reminders of God’s love and grace, especially non-cheesy and non-hokey ones. :) How about some fruits of the Spirit touches?

  • sabrina

Please don’t make this type of art at the exclusion of your other art!

    • sarahjanestudios

      Don’t worry Sabrina:)

  • Jennifer

Yes please! How about a few preteen/YW quote/thoughts to help encourage self worth and a positive attitude? :) Oh and plase don’t forget the redheads. I love your art and would love to have something that works for my 10 year old redhead daughter and 4 year old dark brown/black haired daughter. Thanks so much. Can’t wait to see what you come up with. It’s always lovely!

  • Juanita

Yes, please! I would definitely like some of this art in our house. What about something with a guardian angel in it? I love the retro images of scrappy little kids with a little (kid) angel right beside them. And anything with Mary in it? I agree with another comment–something with the idea of grace in it would be nice too.

  • http://www.thebusybean.com Colleen

These are gorgeous. I would love to see more, and I know lots of my friends would too. It’s a hard balance between too baby-ish and too grown up. I think your found that balance wonderfully.

  • Lara

    Yes please!!!

  • Senja

Oh yes, please!! We are expecting a baby in July and this would be perfect for the nursery! :)

  • laura

I vote YES too! Sounds fabulous.

  • http://thingstomakeinsteadofdinner.blogspot.com/ kristine hanson

ditto, ditto, ditto on yes for more Christian art. I have little signs in each of my childrens rooms that just simply say “God Bless this child” and the bible verse 1 Samuel 1:27 “for this child I have prayed” you could take that as praying for the child before, they were born, after and present….every parent I think is familiar with that, praying for their child. :)

  • Alison

Yes. I love that top one. I want to put it in the boys’ room, only I want to commission one with dark brown Calvin hair. :) Hope to see you soon. Sorry about the strep today.
    -Al

  • http://www.jibberishdesigns.com Irelle

Yes – My grandchildren would LOVE these in their rooms.

  • ina

Sarah, it’s your blog and your life so go for it! I love your little guy with his arms open to the light. :)

  • Kristen

In my humble opinion, your beautiful artwork pairs PERFECTLY with Christian/spiritual sayings! I love love love the “I am a child of God”, I could name 100 LDS children’s primary song titles that would be just as perfect. I can’t wait. :)

  • http://isenbergers.blogspot.com Dana

That would be great! I still have the shepherd boy with Jesus print hanging from Christmas. I’d rather look at it instead of a blank wall with no scripture. I liked the first print with the boy saying I am a child of God. Good job!!

  • Rebecca S.

    Yes, a thousand times yes!

  • http://Www.studiobrassy.com BrassyDel

Same boat as Lorene here: not for me, but I definitely see a hole in the marketplace and have friends and family I can see loving it! Most Christian children-oriented art readily available is TERRIBLE. Then again, I think a lot of kid-directed art is awful, and that’s why I read your blog. It’s very fresh!

  • http://www.rebeccasroundup.blogspot.com Rebecca

Dear Sarah, I have been reading your blog for quite some time now. I think you have amazing talent and style. Your artwork is exactly what you’re looking for – light, happy, sweet. I dont know if you’re LDS or not- if so, you know you could find a perfect little niche there and it would take off. Either way- you should definitely share your talent and use it for good like you have been and this would be another great way to do so. I love what I’ve seen so far and can’t wait to see more! I hope my words encourage you! I am also a stay at home mother of 3 little ones and your blog along with a watercolor set and sketch pads my father gave me last year (I’d be honored if you read about it here http://rebeccasroundup.blogspot.com/2011/07/one-of-best-gifts.html?m=1) and although an amatuer, have encouraged me to explore this talent and it’s something special that speaks to my heart. So thank you, and in answer to your question, please yes! Keep up the good work :)

  • meghan

yes please! i’m doing my new little girls room in your children at play fabric and would love to have art work like this to go along with it. i’m been trying to find some sort of “i am a child of god” (or similiar) prints that go. this would be perfect!!

  • katie s

    Yes! I love it!!

  • http://www.inchmark.squarespace.com brooke reynolds

No. It’s a horrible idea. Just kidding.. I think you can tell by the millions of comments ahead of mine that this is a niche you can beautifully fill! Please do!

  • Melanie H.

This is so wonderful. I recently found your art and I love the way it all encourages goodness, sharing, modesty, creativity, nurturing, friendliness, and love. It is all so virtuous and lovely. Adding some with religious themes would just be a natural extension of what you are already doing. Thanks so much for spreading happiness!

  • http://www.chickadeechickadeeclothing.blogspot.com ashley

Yea!! You will have my business! I found a few Bible verse art prints on etsy for my children a few years ago, but would love more–especially for little boys! I re-did our newest baby’s room in almost all Children at Play and it would be so fun to add a touch more Sarah Jane to it! here’s a link to his room so far… :) http://babyculbygrows.blogspot.com/2012/01/little-guys-nursery.html

  • Karen B.

why promote exclusivity? I just want to see art, not dogma.

  • Brianne

Yes! I want to buy the “I am a Child of God” print right now for my new baby’s nursery!

  • sarahjanestudios

Oh don’t worry Karen! This is just something I thought some would like! I’ve got more artwork coming just as presently:)

  • http://www.anxiouslyhopeful.blogspot.com Beth

Yes, Yes, Yes!! I love your work and both of the above prints would be a welcome reminder in our home about “Whose” my children are.

  • Shayla

I would LOVE to see more work like this! Thank you!

  • http://colleenamareena@blogspot.com ColleenaMareena

I love it, and I totally agree about much of the Christian art “out there” nowadays. I also like the idea of YW themes! My husband & I teach Valiant 11 and I know our girls would love notebooks or little prints that are sweet and feminine without being babyish. Great idea!

  • http://fabricmutt.blogspot.com/ Heidi

I join all the other moms here to say “Bless you!!!” I’m thrilled to pieces at the work you have in this post and the possibility of more to come!

  • Debbie

    I love this!

  • Mak

Yes, please. I want to buy the “I am a child of God” one right now. So sunny and happy. I’d also like to see something along the lines of Jesus loves little children. Also, Book of Mormon/Bible heroes and story illustrations would be awesome.

  • http://helpfulannalisa.wordpress.com Annalisa

BEE Encouraged! You’re doing great work!!

  • AmyH

Yes, yes and yes! Especially can you make a girl “I am a child of God”? The joy in that picture is contagious! TFS!

  • CJ

OH YES!! The two prints you have in this post are a great beginning!

  • http://davispartyof4.blogspot.com Carrie Davis

Yes, I want to buy the first one already!!

  • Wendy

Oh, YES! I am a grandmother of ten {so far…} and I would love to have some of your beautiful artwork with a christian message. Thank-you!

  • http://hopeforthehollises.blogspot.com/ Katie Jo

I am an adoptive mom of two children from China. I always check to see if you have any little almond eyed kids so I can put some art work of kids that look like them up in their room.
Additionally, I love verses, or I like one word type things…Chosen, Forever Family, Faith, Hope, Love, Courage, Brave…
Another fun idea would be pictures of your animals “adopting”another animal that doesn’t look like them…like two spotted bunnies adopting a little brown bunny.

  • Jen Y

I love these – & I think they would be great not just in a children’s room. What pretty cards they’d make!

  • Roxy

    Yes! Oh, so very much!!

  • http://www.outbackcrafter.blogspot.com dEBRA

    Oh yes please .

  • http://claresplaceblog.blogspot.com.au/ Clare

LOVE the I am a child of God print! A girls version would be fantastic! Your work is beautiful as always.

  • http://www.thoughtfulescapes.blogspot.com April

Yes, please! Sweet confirmation of 11+ girls being precious in His sight! (Like Clare said, a girl version of I am a child of God & what Jen Y said about cards too)

I love everything I have seen of yours. Thanks for wanting to provide what we can’t find to encourage our children towards Christ.

  • BERTRAND Marie- Andrée

  • Caroline

I love these – I have 7 year old twin girls who would love these (and so do I!!!). We would love scripture (I have put up a quote from Matthew 28:20 on their wall for when they have nightmares – they look at it and go back to sleep now – would be really lovely with one of your prints!!)

  • Yvonne @Nellie’s Niceties

I think it’s a fabulous idea. Your artwork is truly lovely and your fabric line is delightful. I have just made a quilt for my brand new grandson using the Children at Play designs and is very much loved. I am sure that his Mummy and Daddy would love to add more of your art to his nursery. :)

  • Lindy Penny

Love, love, love them, just hope I can get them in the UK when you have them ready for sale!

  • Danette

Luv to have one in my Grandson’s room!! Will there be different tones in skin color too?

  • http://www.paintingsbymarissa.com Terri

I say continue making and add whatever God places on your heart. Satan certainly wouldn’t inspire you to add scripture-based or Christian artwork. :) All of your artwork is precious.

  • http://kidgiddy.com Kerry – Kid Giddy

I would absolutely LOVE it! As an artist we have to do what we are inspired to do. We can’t please everyone 100% of the time, but we try…and in that process, we also please ourselves and find refuge in that. Good for you! It’s beautiful and I LOVE it! I’m hoping to see it on fabric too! ; )

Have a wonderful day!!! – kg

  • Kelly

I have been admiring your illustrations for some time now, but this is just the icing on the cake! I have been on the lookout for inspiring words to fill the rooms of my two little girls, and this is just the kind of thing I have been looking for! Looking forward to seeing all you have “up your sleeve”.

  • Lindsey

I would absolutely LOVE to buy that art if you made it. I love your work and have already tagged your “be smart, be nice, be curious, be happy” art for a kids room someday if I am ever so lucky. The art you just proposed would be most ideal!

  • Susie

Yes! It would be such a gift to have your inspirational Christian artwork…PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE!

  • Karin

yes, Yes and YES! For Easter I wanted to give the kids Christian art for their bedrooms… I was thinking the lamb and lion print for my boys… but didn’t have anything specific in mind for the girls. Any way these prints will be ready by Easter?! I’m willing to wait- your art is definitely worth the wait;)

  • Dawn

YES, I love your art and I love what I see in this post. I am always looking for ways to encourage my children and keep His word in their hearts.

  • shauntel

    Yes, please. :)
    Your art is beautiful.
The combination of your child-friendly, joyful art and the inspiring phrases I want my family to see everyday is perfect!

  • Courtney

YES! They are so darling! I would definitely put them up in my kids’ rooms!

  • Emily R.

YES! I would love to see more Christian inspired art!

  • http://Ellieandjohn.typepad.com Amy

Yes, yes, yes, Sarah. Would love to see and help promote great Christian children’s art to my Church community and good friends who are alum from my Christian College. Keep us posted! Was very inspired by your print you created at Christmas!

  • cinny

yes, in different languages, too :)

  • http://songskatesang.typepad.com/ Kate @ Songs Kate Sang

OH, that would be absolutely lovely!

  • http://familyvolley.blogspot.com Heather Johnson

Please please please do this. I can already see your beautiful work in our children’s rooms. Fingers crossed.

  • Sue

Love it! Love your work, and I was hoping you’d do this!

  • Liz

We have loved having your artwork up in our kids’ rooms. Your artwork has always felt uplifting and encouraged good principles, something that we value for our children. It would be wonderful if you created more religious art for kids! There’s just not enough available and I know my family would welcome it.

  • Manda

I’d love it. How about: “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young.” Maybe a bit wordy for art ;)

  • Kelly

Oh my goodness, YES! I am a huge fan of your art.. and even though you’re talking art for a kids room and I’m in college, I would DEFINITELY buy a piece. Please do it!

  • Kym

What a wonderful idea! I saw your Tread Lightly on My Dreams & thought it was just beautiful! My 10 year old little girl loved it too.
Last year I found the blog of a Christian children’s artist who includes scripture with a fun collage style.
    chrissiegrace.blogspot.com
    Can’t wait to see more!

  • http://www.thesimpleandbeautifullife.com Melinda Joy

Yes Please! I can’t wait to see what you come up with!

  • http://onelittlegreentree.blogspot.com Karen L

YES!!! (a million times.) Too much of the children’s christian artwork I have seen is either too cartoony or too serious. I love the two pictures you have on this sight. I can’t wait to see what you come up with. :)

  • jamie

These are so beautiful. The boy in the sunshine just makes me smile. I would LOVE more.

  • http://makingmorewithless.blogspot.com Alisa

Yes! 100 times yes! I’d love to see your art paired with even some simple Bible verses that would be good for children to remember always.

  • http://howtodriveawomancrazy.blogspot.com Erin

Love it! I hope you’ll do a “Stop it!” piece, now:)
