Peach Picking

We’ve been lucky to go peach picking a couple times this summer. Nothing like fresh peaches!

I’m a sucker for just eating them straight…over ice cream, on cereal, or just cut up plain for lunch.

But I’d love to know from you….What have you been doing with your peaches this summer? Any recipes you have found that are to die for? I usually do a peach cobbler…simple oats and sugar mixture on top, baked in the oven. But I’m inclined to make some more desserts before summers over. How do you like your peaches best?

Happy (peachy!) weekend:)

I like my peaches best just as is! I love fresh fruit. There is a sign near my house that says “fresh peaches, 2 miles this way” and I haven’t made the trip yet to check it out. I should though.

I grilled them and put them on a salad. Delicious! Just cut them in half, brush them with olive oil and put them flesh side down on a medium hot grill. It carmelizes the sugars and REALLY brings out the peachy goodness. :)

We love peach picking! New Jersey grows wonderful peaches so it’s worth the trip over the bridge. Last summer, I made a huge batch of peach and cherry chutney. I canned it and had to eat all winter long. With a simple piece of grilled meat, it was nearly an instant meal for busy days. I think the recipie came from Martha Stewart and I tweaked it a little. The year before, we made peach butter, which is delicious but a little material intense. We’re going picking this week, but I haven’t decided what we’ll do with them yet. Besides eat them, of course!

there is nothing like a good ‘ol fresh peach pie. Last time I ordered utah peaches I made pie filling for 3 pies. I put the filling (per pie) into a zip lock freezer bag, placed it in the pie pan and froze it. after it was solid I took the pie pans out of my freezer and stacked the frozen pie filling in the freezer. we had “fresh” peach pie for chrismtas that year. Just pop it into a pie crust and bake a bit longer than you would a fresh pie.

We enjoy grilled peaches at our house. I just throw chunks in a grill basket and barbeque them along with whatever else we’re having for dinner. It adds a nice smoky flavour but the peaches are still sweet.

I LOVE to make a batch of traditional lemonade and then puree some fresh peaches to add into the mix or even just a few slices added to the glass! YUMMO!

freezer jam so you can still have peaches in the middle of winter or a peach chutney/salsa to put on fish tacos or grilled chicken. Peaches are also good diced in a lettuce salad for a little sweetness.
