Happy Birthday Sarah Jane.
October 07, 2008

No, it isn’t my birthday….it is Sarah Jane Studios 1 year anniversary!! WOW! I still can’t believe the shop has been going for an entire year! And what an amazing journey it has been the past 365 days! I truly believe that what you feel most comfortable doing as a child, you will find yourself doing as an adult…or wish you were doing, which if that is the case listen to your inner wishes! That is what I did. If you asked me when I was 7 what I wanted to be when I grew up, it was to be an artist and a mom, and maybe even have a shop. And presto: 22 years later, that is what I am doing! No…It hasn’t been easy…but it has been SO rewarding on so many levels!
So, the actual anniversary of my shop opening was on Oct. 4 (but I have been sick as well as husbandless the past several days which means ZERO mommy time) But we can’t have a birthday without a celebration!!! I just feel so grateful for the past year…the friends I have met, the support you have given…it is truly overwhelming sometimes. Thank you!!
This year’s present…in honor of the 12 months that have transpired…I am giving away 4 of my new calendars from my “month by month” series.! Yes, they are finally completed! I think you will just love them. These calendars are really more like a piece of art for your wall, with a few numbers that happen to be on the bottom. Just darling!
They will be in the shop by tonight for only $24. They will make the perfect gift, or mini art peice for that empty wall next to your phone or desk. Each page measures 8.5×5.5 inches and is completed with green grosgrain ribbon perfect for hanging!
But for you, my dear friends: A free gift from me!
To win a calendar, all you need to do is:
- enter a comment below with a suggestion for something you would like to see in my shop for next year
- Your name and a way to contact you (email, or blog link)
- Comments will be closed on Oct 10th at Midnight EST
- Check back on October 11th at to see the 4 lucky winners!
Thank you so much for all your support over this past year! I have loved getting to know you, and if I haven’t met you yet, pop in and say hello! I am nice…I promise:) In the mean time…Happy commenting!

My girls and I would love to have one of your beautiful calendars.
I think it would be fun to see more brother & sister/sister & sister/ brother & brother illustrations. That would be super fun.
I would be thrilled to have a calendar!
I can’t wait for more of the three bears series- I’m dreaming of beds and bowls!
congratulations! your calendar is beautiful; i adore it.
my suggestion: personalization.
here’s to another great year of sarah jane studios!
Hi ,deluking to say, Congratulations and I would love to see pictures including a child or anybody’s for that matter monogram. I have a bit of a thing for monograms.
congratulations!
though this might be a bit of work, i would love to see your images transferred to the top of a little keepsake box… even if it were a block of wood to free-stand on a table top or dresser. it would be too cute!
I so adore your work – we’re ordering the quite a few elephant and bunny prints for our baby girl’s nuersry.
I would love to see a few more african american pics of the little girl featured in your ‘dress-up party’ piece.
happy birthday! love your work!
i would like to see some kind of monogram stuff offered.
Oh the calendar is so beautiful!!! i’d love to see a Read With Me print with a little boy.. I have your little girl one but am expecting a little boy this December and would love to start a collection of little boys reading to inspire him to be a reader!
SO beautiful!
I am looking for some beautiful old alphabet flash cards…sarah jane style. I’d love that.
So cute! I would love to see other items…like notebooks, journals, etc.!
What I wouldn’t give for 365 days of SJS! Would you please make a tote or bookbag for next year?
I would LOVE these calendar prints. I’ve had my eye on them. I would LOVE LOVE LOVE them.
Suggestion: I know you have a few boy prints, but as a mom of 2 boys…I’d love to see more. My oldest loves to read, so I’d love the Read With Me print of a little (red-headed) boy
You are very Talented!
I’m keeping my fingers crossed on this giveaway!
I would so adore winning one of these calander sets….and my suggestion to you is, please more, more, more of the same…You are in my mind the modern equvilent to my favorite children’s illustrator of all time, Jesse Wilcox Smith…I would love to see some Mommy/baby Daddy/baby and more brother/sisiter type prints….and keep it vintage. You are an increidble artist. I am truly enamored with your work.
Oh, the calendar is CHOICE!!! I love it and I love the green ribbon with it. I would love to see a ‘beach series’. Your family is from hawaii, I love Hawaii, good enough for me. Little kids/families/animals basking in the sun……..beautiful foliage…….amazing underwater adventures…….all in that simple sarah Jane style I love. Congratulations on a hard working year. May you find balance and joy in the coming year as well. You’re inspiring!
Calendar Joy! I have been so looking forward to the Sarah Jane calendar. My girls would love Sarah Jane story books, or sketch books–they have hijacked my “I would really like to” notepads, and I would love little note tags for presents!
I just adore your work! I’ve been so excited to see your completed calendar girls. My suggestion: I would love to see something mom and baby. Would be the greatest baby gift! Congrats on such a productive year in the midst of young motherhood!
I love, love, love everything you do! But I especiallly love (and would love to see more of) little girls playing. Also would love different size options on the prints. How many times can I say “love”??
I love the calendar! It turned out so darling. I’d also love a little boy “read with me” print, the girl is so cute but as a mom of two school age boys I would love one for them. Alphabet Notecards would be awesome. What a perfect addition to a playroom!
I suggest having things for scrapbookers…embellishments, very cute pattern paper, stickers, etc. I love your vintage look!
Happy birthday to your wonderful business, you deserve all of your success!
Something I’d like to see is an illustration to go with the phrase, “No more monkeys jumping on the bed!”
numero uno, ena, one, 1, ????, ichi, …. congratulations.. definetely notetags for childrens presents, gift giving and tied with the beautiful grosgrain ribbon in colourful colours… love the idea of your artwork on a tote bag for kids (or mums
) Have a beautiful year leading on to number due, thio, two, ni, ???
Your “journey” through this first year was amazing. I hope everything for you and your family will go on as lucky!
You are such a darling person! My Englisch is not the best, so I didn´t comment earlier, but I would realy wish to own one of your sweet calenders.
I´m from Austria – far away, but very pleased everytime I read from you.
I would like to see much “seasonal stuff” (christmas, easter,…) for I like the holidays.
Love and Greetings from Bernadette
I love your prints! I would love to see more boy prints — especially one in the style of your “little artist.” I’ve ordered some animal prints for my youngest son’s room, but would love artwork for my older son. Maybe even a vintage print of a boy in a cape (since he’s secretly a superhero you know)
I just love your website and your etsy store, the prints just remind me of being a little girl….suggestions….maybe a few more prints or cards with just little boys? I have a boy and a girl and would love to get each of them a print, several to pick from for a girl but just a seasonal print here or there with a boy in it….maybe a print of a boy like the “little artist” but just a boy….just an idea or two…love your items, I will be buying a calender for MYSELF as a gift if I don’t win one, thanks!!
Happy Anniversary! I’d like to see more little boys depicted. I’d really like to see a little boy with a toy sailboat, but that is getting very specific. Best wishes for your second year. I love your art. It connects with me.
Happy Birthday! Love this post. I’ve been thinking that same thing about getting back to the basics of what I love to do. Which as you so smartly pointed out is what I loved to do as a kid – art, nature, food, singing, dancing …
Since I have 2 little girls, I would love to see you do something about sisters.
I want a calender…BAD!
Please pick me!! I have two daughters that share a room and this calender would match it perfectly! I
ideas: anything beach, shells, ocean, etc. On prints, notebooks, planners, tote bags. We go to Sanibel Island Fl. every year to pick up shells. Your beach prints remind me of there
Love all your designs. a lot.
Yeah! I have been checking often to see your calendar revealed and I love it. As usual all of your work is so precious and perfect. I have 3 prints in Kate’s room and they are darling. And your frames too! Thank you for sharing your talent. They make my little one smile!
A suggestion for your 2nd year may be a cute tote bag or tee with your artwork on it. That would be fun!
Thanks Sarah. Best wishes for another successful year!
I SOOO desperately want to give this calendar to my mom. She is a teacher and recently purchased your little lamb postcard..it made her terribly happy. I know she would love love love this!
I would love to see more illustrations with pets in them (dogs, cats, etc) and it would be neat to have a set of magnets with your illustrations on them..
Happy Happy Birthday!….Time seems to fly so fast doesn’t it? Oh how I love giveaways even though I never win. I think all the luck that I have ever had has been drained from me…….wish me luck….crossing my fingers

Fingers crossed!
I’d love to see more of the alphabet print you mentioned a few weeks ago.
Lovely work – your images are stunning.
I would love to see a print featuring “sisters” with two little girls. Or even different sets of siblings together.
So pretty! I’d like to see silhouettes of entire families– I know you illustrate childhood, but I’d love to see Moms and Dads through your eyes as well.
A tote bag – I use them so much for just about everything these days – I would love to have one representing SJS.
Hi Sarah Jane,
Congratulations on reaching one year! My suggestion for your shop is the handmade cards for all year round not just Christmas. For example I am making a baby quilt at the moment for my friend and would love a ‘handmade card’ (or sticker) to go with it. Another suggestion I have is for return address labels with some of your beautiful illustrations. And finally, party favour toppers – an illustrated mini card or sticker that can be attached to a celophane bag or similar that has a little message “thank you for coming to my party”. Hope you find some inspiration here! I don’t even need to say how much I would love on of those calendars!!
Regards
Jennifer
Happy 1 Year!
Mmm… suggestions. I don’t really have suggestions—more like ideas. I definitely like see people of color featured in your prints so definitely keep that up. Um, you could illustrate holidays, you know, kids enjoying holidays. Oh, and you could write a book about Christmas, since I need to find one that explains what Christmas is to my daughter, and it would be cool if it included the spiritual side of Christmas as well as ol’ Santy. But thats just me dreaming really big. ;o)
happy one year!
i love the tea party prints – maybe we could have tea parties outside, you know in the trunks of hollow trees or on tree stumps with lots of squirrels, bunnies, mice, etc… invited to the party.
How wonderful to have a giveaway…I would love to win!!!!
I would love to see some prints of a little boy…One with a favorite “lovey” such as a blankie, car, truck….Little boys play so rough, but I love to see how mine melts when he snuggles in with his favorite “football blankie”. So sweet….
Congrats on one year!!
Happy 1 year Anniversary to you dear Sarah!
I know I can feel it I will be one of the lucky winners of this giveaway….
Now, I would love LOVE to see some fabrics on your shop next year. I know you have been thinking about this, so please PLEASE make it happen. They will be a hit like the rest of your beautiful products…
The calendar looks divine. You are amazing.
One thing I would love – you know the little thank you cards (size of business cards) you put in your packages to buyers – well a little bigger for us. I would love to insert a little note card with a girl handwriting – Thank you – then I can put my message below. So sweet.
Rita
I love the hanging calendars the most. I think stickers would do well. I’m a sucker for anything square and scalloped, so maybe square scalloped stickers.
I’d love to see some farm inspired prints! Children gardening, petting or feeding farm animals, etc.
I’d love to see some little boy prints. with trains or firetrucks.
from another sara jane
Congratulations on a year! Wishing for MANY more! You have received a ton of great ideas. I would love to see a sweet print with a red-headed girl. I’d snap that up in a heartbeat. Also, 2 boys- siblings – together in a print would be cute!
Sarah!
I love your work – so inspiring, and you are such a young designer! You have so many years to love your children, while working from home! Enjoy!
I am a mother of girl/girl twins, and would love to see illustrations of these sisters playing together, or of a mother with her hands full trying to handle all the demands of two little girls!
Blessings!
I would LOVE to have one of your calendars grace my wall! I’d love to see more sweet animals — like the sleeping elephant!
Happy BIrthday/Anniversary!
i vote for more boy stuff. and i love your calendars. i’ll buy one if i don’t win, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t pick me anyway.
first, i would love to win. we have purchased 3 of your prints so far. second, i think your art on children’s shirts would be pretty adorable! happy birthday, sjstudios!
What a wonderful year for you! I just love your style, that’s really all I can say. The prints I bought for my girl make my heart warm
… and I’d love a calendar for her!
A suggestion: when I was little I loved writing to my friends (every day in fact) – perhaps some children’s stationery/letterhead!
I am so proud of you for your business endeavors! You and your art is amazing!
I love the calendars…..keep at it! Looking forward to watching the next year enfold.
Laurie~
Happy Birthday to you! I love what you said about doing now what you loved to do as a child. I’ve been realizing that with myself lately. My career was in film production but constantly lurking inside me was the crafter/creator /sewer I was in my younger years. Now as a mom, I’m able to do that and love it! I’ve tried getting my shop off the ground many times, but it usually ends in me selling all inventory to the girls at church. Some day I’ll get myself organized. Sorry for the ramble.
As for a suggestion…?
Hard! You have such amazing things already. But maybe baby onesies with your artwork printed on front? I would love that!
The finished calender looks awesome! You always inspire me so much, and I love reading what you have to say about art and motherhood. Keep up the great work! My suggestion would be Santa prints for christmas and prints with babies. (like someone else mentioned one with mom and baby would be so sweet!)
I have followed your year…I have October’s illustration…my first purchase of yours. I sure hope I win!
Bravo on your year.
I love everything I you do, cant wait to see what is next!
Are you kidding. I wouldn’t change a thing, except maybe offer a few 5x7s. Love your stuff!
I can’t tell you how much I absolutely love what you do. Your illustrations are just beautiful and enchanting! Have you ever thought of doing a young boy/girl praying? Thanks for sharing your amazing talent!
Happy first anniversary to Sarah Jane Studios. What an amazing achievement to know you have come so far and achieved so much. You bring a smile to my face every single day when I see your “Read with Me” print hanging in my little girls’ room.
I notice that both of my suggestions have already been said, but when you asked for suggestions this is what popped into my mind: “Read With Me Print” for boys and Handmade tags which could be suitable for any occasion, not just Christmas.
Sarah, thank you for using your talents to create beautiful artworks which bring joy to me and so many other people.
Love
Elise.
Congratulation on Sarah Jane first birthday! Look forward to seeing more illustrations.
Your pictures are so lovely. I suggest that you create a writting set for children (or adults) with lovely illustrated paper and envelopes in a nice folder. I feel that we should encourage children to write letters. A special one to Father Christmas would be a good idea. What do you think?
Mary
Congratulations on your anniversary! I discovered your work through NieNie’s auction and I’m hooked. I just bought another print for my daughter’s nursery and plan on buying them for future friends. The calendar is beautiful and will certainly be on my wish list! I would love to see you add more animal prints based on nursery rhymes to your collection. I think these are – well – darling (its really the only word I can come up with that works!) I would especially love to see your interpretation of little girls playing with dogs — as labs & baby girls are my favorite things. Thank you!
happy birthday my lovely!
I love the calendar! I’d like to see more of the elephant & bunny or maybe a boy calendar series?
Hooray! What a milestone! I would love to see more bookplates, as that is my current obsession. Or how about some cooking with Mommy poses?
Sarah~ congratulations on all the wonderfulness~
I think your prints would make fabulous ~Embroidery Kits~
I bet putting together a kit to sell ~ would go over wonderfully!
Big Hugs~ Amy~
Wow, this is a tough one… I think I would love to see more brother / sister prints and more variety of products would be amazing too! Bookmarks, birthday cards, maybe even Christmas ornaments! I just love your work, congratulations on the anniversary!
The calendar is adorable. The illustrations truly gives something to look forward to each month (just like watching the seasons change). Lots of great ideas, so I will put my two cents in. If the inspiration calls, I would love to see a children’s book from you. Your illustration style puts a smile on my face and in my heart (and if I may compare, like those of Tasha Tudor). You have a wonderful gift to intrepret those cherished moments in childhood. Keep up the good work
I am pretty new to your stuff but I LOVE IT . I agree with every one on the personalization/mongram ability. Also I am not sure if you have already done it but I would love to see and alphabet chart with your illustrations I have been looking for one and I think you would do an amazing job. I hope I win the calendar!!
I so love those monthly little girls! Even if I don’t win a calendar I’m going to purchase one!
I really liked your Japanese girl prints. Those were really pretty. I realize Japanese held some personal significance for you, but might you be willing to try some other nationalities as well for more themed sets?
Love your work Sarah Jane!
I think you are already planning on this, but I am excited for a year of month by month prints of a little boy this coming year. A few of these were mentioned above, but I’d also love a little boy reading, anything related to the beach, and sibling pictures. Another thought…maybe a ‘Summer Tea Party’ type scene with boys climbing trees or spraying water with the hose, digging in the mud…something along those lines!
Hi Sarah Jane! Hope you got to read my post all the way down here!
Something I would love to see bloom from your work is more “baby” themes. My husband and are in a battle with infertility, hoping not to be childless for long. I am always finding hope in the images of babies as they give us the strength to keep trying. Your work is so inspiring, I’d love to be inspired by a series of lil’ ones.
I love your work, Sarah and have been following you since seeing you featured on Etsy. I would love more classic children’s books interpreted through your work. (I have the three chairs print). I love collecting vintage children’s books and when I see art matching the stories I can’t resist!
Oh I was just this week saying to my daughter I wish Sarah would make a calandar out of her month prints. I am so happy you did! I was also admiring a very cute vintage playing card illustration with a scottie terrier type puppy on it. I would love to see something of that sort. Happy first year!
April
Boys stuff, with an edge! Cowboys and Indians. Climbing Trees. Riding Horses.
Girls stuff with an edge!
More holiday stuff
To Do Lists, note pads with your colors and designs, but no girls or boys…
If you are doing bags, add table cloths, napkins, dishtowels to the mix. Colors and designs… Homemade with love tags, for sewing projects…
Did I win?
An illustrated children’s storybook – I know you would create something amazing!
I WANT that calendar! Actually, I want 4 so I can give them as gifts! You know I love you and your work Sarah and feel silly giving the artist advice but I would love something to do with boys waiting for and watching trains and planes. My favorite thing to do with my son is go down to watch the trains come into the station. And of course watch planes fly off into the clouds. Preferably a blond curly haired boy…
Just come visit me for some inspiration, we’ve got quite the metropolitan thing happening right here!
I love the warmth of your art. I would love to see some Christmas images. It would be so fun to have a series of prints depicting the warmth of the Christmas season–a perfect match. I don’t know what I would like to see more…Jolly old St Nick, reindeer, snowflakes(and such) or the Christ child, the star, the animals?
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the calendar. I would like to see more diversity in your little ladies. I have a tan skinned, curly dark haired girl and would love to see more that look like her….Keep up the lovely work..
i like the nursery rhyme prints, how about some prints inspired by classic children’s songs? and parent-child teaching/playing moments?
holy moly! I this is so awesome that you have received 79 comments so far! I have always dreamed of creating tea set — your illustrations would make an adorable tea set!
Congratulations on your anniversary and your successful ability to somehow manage being the wife, mother, artist, and business woman! I love your blog and your site and would get days of joy out of looking at your calendar. I think that a perfect addition to your shop would be little calling cards for children with your sweet illustrations (to put in gifts or just to hand out for playdates!) Best wishes for another great year!
I couldn’t possibly have a good suggestion b/c you’re way more creative than me!
But I would love to see a boy version of the calendar…
Congrats on 1 Year! I love every single thing you do!
Lovely. What a great calendar.
I would love to see some little dolls which resemble your characters.
Little children would love them!
Boy stuff. Brother stuff. (3 boys) Holidays. Birthdays!
I absolutely LOVE your art. Do you ever sell any digital stuff? I would love to be able to purchase some of your art to use digitally for personally projects, like my blog, and scrapbooking.
Thank you for a delightful website!
I love the little calender, it’s lovely! My suggestion is a bit of big ask… But I really, really struggle to find nice baby record albums to stock in my shop. Or something simpler like a “Mummy memories” little cardboard box with some nice small illustrations in the corner of a pack of cards for parents to record those little events, (a bit like in the jar post a few weeks ago) not just to comment on tiny babies but to comment on bigger children too, maybe a range… oh how i’m rambling on now!
Hi there!
I just found your blog and LOVE it!
Wonderfull work!
I’d love to see some dolls based on your characters, like someone said above.
big kisses from Brazil!!
I’d love to see something with a little boy and little girl together, of course (twins, even, perhaps?).
Happy Aniversary! You make the loveliest prints which do remind me sooo much of my childhood… Would love to see some boyish themes like boys building a tree hut or
fishing or something like that.. You are great!
Sarah,
These are amazing! I love seeing the prints all put together in a calendar format. Also, for next year, I’d love to see more prints with literary phrases/quotes on them. Call me a word nerd, but I love the combination of art and literature. It sounds like you’ll be plenty busy fulfilling demands for new ideas and prints, if all the comments above are any indication.
I love your work. I would love more holiday postcards…for all holidays. They are so sweet. I am waiting for my Halloween ones to show up.
Congratulations on living your dream! Now if only I could have the courage to live mine.
I love the calendars. I think you should explore gift wrap or gift bags options featuring your work.
Happy Birthday! I’m so glad you are happy doing what you do! It is truly an amazing life we live, isn’t it? I would love to see more with the ‘sport’ girls! And I love it when there are two little girls in your pieces…like the dressing up one!
Happy one year anniversary SarahJaneStudios!
I knew it wasn’t your birthday… it was mine
I think you can’t go wrong with a boys theme next year! Personally I’d also love to see more of Wellesly and Winslow. And here’s a thought to explore: a passe-partout picture frame with one of your illustrations from the calendar at the bottom (just the passe-partout would be fine, just make it a shape that would fit most frames), so you could put a picture in it.
L,
Tania
Happy shop anniversary!!
I would LOVE to see recipe cards out of your picnic scene.
So cute.
I would LOVE to win one of your calendars!! Your work is so inspiring. I love your “little artist” print and would enjoy more of that – it reminds me of my daughter , who loves to paint, draw, sculpt, cut, glue, etc…you name it!
WOW! You have a lot of GREAT comments and suggestions! I personally would LOVE to see another “TEA PARTY” but using your soft colors. Pinks, browns, yellows…. and of course add you charming details!
You are an AMAZING artist and i enjoy snooping in on your cute blog!
Aubrey
I love your calendar !!! Your pictures are just priceless – I can’t wait to redo my girls room – and do it with that special Sarah Jane flavour you bring to all your pieces. I would love for you to make a birthday calendar – where you just have to number and then a line (for the name of that persons birthday09 – so that it can be used for years to come. Love you stuff!!! Truly a gift.
Congratulations and happy birthday Sarah Jane.
We love our little pink girl reading and appreciate your talent.
happy birthday sarah jane studios! my suggestion is to illustrate a book of classic nursery rhymes. your work is lovely and charming.
This calendar is beautiful! I’ll be sure to order one for a gift this holiday season… I wonder if I’ll be able to part with it? Anyhoo… I loved the idea for totes! I’d also love to see stationary. Do people still right letters? I do. I’d love to be able to send letters with these wonderful gals on the page. Congratulations on a wonderful & successful year!
i would love to see more boy illustrations.
hope your shop prospers!
The calendar is so sweet! It would be lovely to see more multicultural children?! Just a thought….to celebrate the global community of familes!
Happy Birthday and congratulations on all your beautiful work.
My suggestion for the shop is boxed sets – 12? – of note cards. I think stationary is such a lovely gift and in this modern age we all need a little encouragement in correspondence by pen. Gorgeous stationary certainly makes the task a pleasure.
Happy Anniversary!!
Love the calendars! I know what my Christmas presents will be this year! haha! Plus, last day to enter the contest!
My suggestion is boxed sets of stationary, or thank you cards. I know tons of people who would use them!
Hi there, I know your cute contest is over, but I was browsing your shop again and thought of one more idea: more things with boys in it. I was thinking of buying one of your prints for my mother-in-law’s playroom, but I don’t want it to be completely “all-girl”, since she has 2 grandsons. Anyway. that’s all. I do like your “boys at play”. But I guess I was looking something with boys and girls playing together.
Okay, again, LOVE everything you do. You are very very talented. Thanks for sharing your work!
Congratulations and Happy Anniversary!
Your prints are lovely unfortunately I simply do not have enough wall space to display them. Thus, I was really thrilled when you announced that you would be creating a calendar. In that same spirit, I would love to get my hands on more day-to-day items featuring your beautiful work.
e.g. baby announces, thank you and plain cards, note books and note pads especially long ones suitable as checklists for grocery shopping (for the many moms who love your work, running errands while looking at a pretty little girl/boy next to the long list I think is rather uplifting) printed children’s tees, pouches, bags, wallpaper border decorations (if you have no idea what i’m talking about search for “wallpaper border” on http://www.mothercare.com for some pictures), illustrated educational cards (ABC/123/Colors)… That’s all I have for now
Looking forward to reading your entries and seeing new stuff for sale!
Happy Birthday! I love your work. Would love to see gift certificates in your shop.
