A bit of an early spook.

September 11, 2008

Ok, so I am about ready to start putting my seasonal prints and stationary up for sale…but before I do, I would love to know what you think about this one. I am trying out a couple new things in photoshop, and I thought it was perfect for a vintage-y halloween spookiness. Haven’t decided if I want to order these as postcards…what do you think?

Oooh, I love these! The crinkliness of the edges, like an old film print! That little brown puffed-sleeve dress for the witch’s costume! The mini-geometric for the grass! Yummy, the whole thing. Maybe I should have a Halloween card list this year, since I never can get my Christmas cards out on time…

I love the kids. I’m not crazy about the dark spots (not sure they make it look vintage; they sort of look like photoshop) and I’d rather buy it without the words. Having said that, I hope you realize that I am a HUGE fan of yours, but you did ask for an opinion. I’ll buy whether you change it or not. I love the kids in it.

wow! Thanks you guys. It will definitely be a print (without the text) as well as a post card. The post cards won’t be available till next week, but I think they will look great! I can’t say I really like this look for any other holiday…but I think it works for halloween. Thanks!

You know I love your stuff–i soooo love your last Halloween’s print. But I have to say I don’t love the “distressing”–it looks too trendy to me. It seems that everyone uses that these days. Can you show it without to compare? I may be the only one–or one of the two–who doesn’t like it.

Or who isn’t sure she likes it. I’d like to see it without to decide.

hmmmm…i love the print. the texture works, definitely. it’s a little different from what i’m used to from you, which isn’t necessarily bad. i think my personal preference would be without the texture. mainly because i think of that particular texture as something i would see on a photograph, whereas something from an old magazine would likely be more yellowed than splotchy. but i think sometimes i deal in reality a bit too much, so who am i to say? i would like to be able to see the pretty sky without the texture, though. but as for the print, it’s absolutely adorable and completely perfect. love the rosy cheeks!

    Sarah Jane says:

mary…maya…totally agree. That is why I put this up here for comments! Thanks! My idea behind it was to explore the idea of an old photo…as if these illustrated characters were real….or being photographed. Not to make it look like a distressed illustration. So, maybe it works, maybe it doesn’t. Thanks for your input…I really love hearing it all. I can’t decide about it either…but frankly, it is new, and maybe just a little bit of spunk for halloween. thanks!

Love it, Sarah! This is what Halloween is all about: little kids in rinky-dink costumes going out and getting candy. Fun times.

i think it’s darling! i love the photoshop vintage techniques and i like that you did something a little different than usual. i think it is great you are trying out new ideas and new looks. obviously you can’t please everyone, but looks like most people love the look! awesome job…perfect for halloween and i like it with or without the text. :) postcards would be adorable and fun to send out for a halloween greeting or party! cute cute!

i LOVE the vintage look on the outer edges. it sooo reminds me of watching our old home movies on the film reel or watching a slide show. i can almost smell my parents old projector screen. [do they all smell that way or was it just ours?] :)

    Joyce says:

I think it would be great (without the dots in the background, distress texture). The words would be okay on the backside, but if not…just the picture. I think it would be a great party invitation for a All Hallow’s Eve Monster Bash!?

  • 36
    Rachel says:

i have one more thought about why i think it works here (the distressed outer edge). i was trying to think of some of your other art with the distressed look & i couldn’t really picture it being used in other illustrations. i think why i like it here is because it really is reminiscent of old movies. and so your little girl reading the book wouldn’t be in a home movie… but a little halloween party or parade would be. i think scenes (special events & occasions) that would’ve made mom & dad drag out the old 8 mm camera are what are worthy of getting that look. i think a christmas party, new years, valentine’s day party all would look so cool with that look, too. dance recitals.. i’m just trying to think of occasions that were always worthy of my parents dragging out the old 8mm (then later the gigantic video camera that came with a backpack – ha!).

so i think the theme that would work with this look would be: special occasions, holiday parties, school & church plays, dance recitals, neighborhood parades, etc. i’m not sure if this delineation makes sense to any one else, but thought i’d share why i thought it works!

I love it as is, very beautiful. Just my perfect idea of a vintage Halloween.

    Cheryl Oz says:

I like the muted colors, and then the red lollipop for a little pop of some bright color. The vintage style is very fitting for a Halloween card. CUTE! I think the background textures works nicely, although, I think it would be just as cute without it too.

  • 39

Adore it. I think the texture is fun and makes it seem like a vintage Halloween decoration.

Your illustrations are beautiful!! Do you ever do any on a larger scale that people could hand on their wall?
